LAW 27: PLAY ON PEOPLE’S NEED TO BELIEVE TO CREATE A CULTLIKE FOLLOWING

People have a need to have something or someone to believe in. This results in a belief system that they can devote themselves entirely. Also remember that people are interested in things that are mostly supernatural or fantasy.

Law 27 explains that anyone can create a cult as long as they follow five easy steps:

Keep it Vague; Keep it Simple.

Emphasize the Visual and the Sensual over the Intellectual.

Borrow the forms of organized Religion to structure the Group

Disguise your source of income

Set-up an Us-Versus-Them Dynamic

In short, these steps prevent the people from really thinking and being skeptics. People are entranced by the promise of receiving greatness from their leader by the things they are asked to follow or do. These steps create a mist of lies that are seen as true and concrete things by the followers. The law forces the people to turn to worshipping false idols, which from a Christian perspective, is a grave sin.

One instance in which this law is depicted is from the historical context. In 1653, Francesco Borri told everyone with great enthusiasm and elaboration that the archangel Michael had given him the power to see people’s souls. The people were swayed by his convincing speech that they began to follow him.

This law takes advantage of the fact that the more people involved, the easier it is for one person to be swayed by the thoughts of others in the group. “Before God we are all equally wise - and equally foolish.” - Albert Einstein

Honestly speaking, I doubt if this idea would work as it promotes something unrealistic and unattainable to accomplish . . . it would be better if the leader had a cultlike following on more realistic factors like number of victories, etc.

i guess this law is saying that you don't really need to establish a religion. all you have to do is create something that you know people will follow and use that to make them follow you. it involves playing with people's desires, enticing them with the things they long for. this, i believe, is what this law means by a "cult." it's just a way of manipulating and controlling people, making them worship something YOU created and thus they indirectly worship and follow you. these days, however, it's pretty hard to accomplish that. people are just not as dumb or as gullible as they used to be. carrying out this law of power will require some skill, i believe.

This is only half of the process in making a cult following. The first step in which this law discusses is about creating a following. The next and much harder step is preserving this following. I mean what’s the point in making a following if it will quickly end?

In the beginning of times, it was proven that even before religions were introduced, man always yearned for a higher being to praise. This shows that man has a high inclination for the supernatural and that is why this law is very effective. Making a cult promise very vague and hard to believe fantasies that will sway people to follow. Then again aside from that, being in a cult also answers the need for protection. It forms a concept of brotherhood, which many believes is true. If one can manipulate others through making a cult, he/she could pretty much manipulate them in giving anything for the cult itself, just like puppets and a puppeteer.

Jamie Bauza: "if these people (whoever you get) are THAT easy to fool, would you really want them on your team?

It's like in the movies, where the evil guy hires stupid minions to do the dirty work. The dumber the better, because it's easier to get them to follow you and get their money afterwards.

@Jamie: That will always be the problem when letting others do the dirty work for you. You're basically taking a risk whenever you let someone else execute your plans. No one can work exactly as you please. Still, you need henchmen for certain situations to gain more power. You can't conquer on your own.

if anything goes wrong, there's only one thing to do....RUN.

I agree with Jamie when he said the law might not work in the long run because a lot of people today can actually think. We're a pretty rational race thanks to the Enlightenment. Yes for the need or want of the human race to have something to believe in you could create a "following", but you can't just work on false pretense alone. When people find out and eventually there will be some, instead of gaining power, or continuing to bask in it, you'd lose it of course and would probably be thought of as a joke.

i agree to jamie,

i believe that we should think about the long-term effects of this law.

When fooling other people, you are also fooling yourself and living in your fantasies

Also, by any chance you get caught by the people lying, you will lose you credibility and may not be believed by people anymore

I agree with Janna when she said that it would be hard to accomplish this law. Creating a cult following will only work if you will be able to establish one which is based on beliefs that really really appeal to some people and will be readily believed by them. That alone is hard to do. Secondly, effective cult leaders are those who are immensely charismatic and sympathetic (whether genuinely or outwardly) towards their devotees. There is a certain personality that is required to be effective in recruiting people to be your followers.

It will be hard to establish a cult at the outset but once you form a substantial amount of people in your cult, it is without doubt that you will obtain immense power and influence over your followers. If you remember the cult leaders of the past, you will really see how great their influence on their devotees was. It was very easy to direct the devotees to do the leader's bidding. With this, I do think that this is a very powerful law but only if you are keen enough to know what people want to believe and maintain their adoration towards you.

Apart from the fact that it's hard to make people believe you that blindly (as in a cult), as the others said, I think it's going to be really hard to start and maintain a large following.

People may not easily believe you, or follow your every order. Of course, people following you of your own accord will always be better than people who are following you like zombies. Haha.

I don't think this law will work either. Cults won't thrive in the presence of organized and satisfying religions and in such an era where a high regard is placed on discussion. Plus, you can't just play on everyone's faith and capacity to yearn for the transcendent mainly because faith and reason go hand in hand (especially in times such as these). I mean, one can't just follow something blindly. Faith should not be blind!
And this law also pertains to something that we're all very touchy about- our beliefs. And it's pretty hard to bring together a community that'll definitely share the same beliefs. With religion, yes, but with a cult?

It's not too late!

I also doubt that it will work. You can form a group with the same ideas and the like but it's hard to make them listen to you. And it's difficult to assume that you're already the leader. and I question the changing power of the cult. Will they be influential enough to change the minds of other people? The influence might just circle around the group.

Creating a cult is like the creepiest thing anyone can do nowadays.

But, of course, it does still mean power, and there are countless of cults around with relatively big followings (I don't want to name any).

Another "But": But, as Janna said, it is very hard to get people to follow you because people are not as gullible nowadays. Cults are frowned upon by society, and most people that are affiliated with cults are (okay this is mean) considered "crazy"---so cults have this repulsive aura.

Again, another "But": But this is only in the modern times, back then, creating cults are way easier; this it was a practical way of getting power back then.

Some microscopes have a built-in light source while others are fitted with a mirror to reflect light from a lamp. In some conditions blood does not pass but urine is red which may be alarming to the patient eg some medicines like doxorubicin, cloroquine, desferoxamine, Ibuprofen, Iron sorbitol, Nitrofurantoin, Phenazopyridine, Phenolphthalein, Rifampin etc. Adjustable to accomodate slides of different thickness.
