Law #15 Crush Your Enemy Totally

Revenge is sweet, they say. It is a fountain for the vindictive, a tonic for the beleaguered. That revenge has changed the course of history is a fact for since times past, a number of personages have been involved in this deed of vengeance.
Mary Queen of Scots was said to have articulated, “No more tears now; I will think upon revenge.” This she said after the murder of her secretary, David Rizzio on 1566. The murder was orchestrated by an opposing faction led by her husband, Lord Danley. The following year, Lord Danley was found murdered. In the same way, sometime in the 19th century, Cornelius Vanderbilt, an American industrialist, wrote a letter to his former business associates that read, “You have undertaken to cheat me. I won't sue you, for the law is too slow. I'll ruin you.”
We all want a sense of security – security from imbalance, chaos and adversity. It is, however, a fact that we cannot acquire such surety as long as our enemies exist – they who plot against us, who plan our demise. The revenge of our challengers can be a frightful thing, especially when they have been afforded time to prepare for the next confrontation.
According to Robert Greene, “…the only peace and security you can hope for from your enemies is their disappearance.” Total annihilation of our adversaries is key then, as Law #15 tells us. Anytime we acquire the opportunity, unreserved obliteration is essential. This way any hatred an enemy may be brewing will not turn into retribution that may ultimately be the root of our downfall.
But then when we ponder in the few prized moments we reflect on life, we are made to realize the appropriateness of this law with regards to Christian morals which value compassion, mercy, and forgiveness. In this day and age, being a ruthless power player is unlike being one in the past, when homicide was not as abhorrent in the eyes of society. We may not kill our enemies like we kill animals for domesticity – it is now against the law. Total attainment of power is repressed as moral beliefs prevent us from being like Wu Chao, Empress of China, who killed even the flesh of her flesh to attain the position of power she held for years or like Liu Pang, who put a bounty on the head of his former friend, Hsiang Yu, indirectly bringing about his tragic death.
I now inquire everyone: Is power worth more than good associations with others? Is it worth crushing our fellow men, be they friends or enemies, knowing the already established moral tenets of society?

To be able to succeed, one must be able to convince a group of people to believe in his cause. But it must not be purely academic. Keep it simple for them to understand, and keep them entertained, and keep them believing in your cause. These ideas of acquisition is somehow being done by our politicians, especially those from the religious sects. Having a steady support group, they use these ideas to lure more people into their groups. Some succeed, some don't.

Power is not worth having if you lose good affiliates, especially it they are your own friends.

Truly, when one pursues or maintains power by means of relentless brute force on other people, making them get down on their knees (literally and figuratively) yet denying them compassion and kindness, will definitely lead to that person's demise. And this demise is very unpleasant because its sentence on that person is a face that emanates lack of integrity, poor leadership, deceitfulness, and provocativeness. This face will cause that person's loss of good affiliates, and prevent other people to seek his or her counsel, provide him or her support, and even offer him or her alliance, thus, rendering that person powerless all the more.

I believe that the literal understanding of this law is more applicable in the Medieval Ages wherein, as Joselle implied, the view of society is pretty much very different from today's setting. In present times, this total annihilation can be viewed in many scopes. Although it is not literally killing the person physically, you can kill him in other aspects, spiritually, psychologically and etc. But the same principle holds true, you bombard him until revenge is impossible. You don't leave him half alive, half dead. You leave him lifeless. But if moral values are non-existent in your life, better yet kill your enemies. For sure, once you've did, there's nothing to fear about anymore.

But is it actually ethical if you eliminate your enemies totally? I mean, if you are to gain power, why not rather opt to find a weakness of theirs and use it to our advantage?

Or better yet, why not make your enemies dependent on you instead? You see, going this way you do not commit murder, and at the end of the day you still gain power.

this law brings to my mind horror movies. at the end of the movie, the hero/es manage/s to kill the monster/s. but then, we see that the monster isn't completely destroyed and somehow manages to survive in order to return in the movie's sequel.
kidding aside, i still don't believe in completely annihilating someone or ruining them for the rest of their lives. either they will avenge themselves or someone will. this will start a chain of killing sprees or senseless but endless disputes. i think at some point someone should stop all this by forgiving and forgetting. completely crushing your enemy won't give you the power you want. perhaps it will for awhile but then there will most likely be someone who won't be pleased with what you did and that someone will eventually turn on you.

I think that's exactly the point of the law. That's exactly the reason why you should crush your enemy totally. Machiavelli once said that, if you have enemies, then you should crush your enemies, including their kins.

But then again, wouldn't making them dependent on you a better option instead of actually killing them?

Power isn't worth more than good associations. How can you have power without anyone there around you. Your people would go far away from you.

Crushing enemies totally is quite impossible, think of it this way.. if there is a protagonist, there must be an antagonist... if you crush your enemies totally, the others might turn against you and become your new enemies. you might as well eliminate all people who are potentially enemies that way for balance. There must be conflict all the time. There must be a match for everything don't you agree?

I don't think it's worth crushing (physically/spiritually/morally,etc.) our fellow men just for power. This isn't just for the sake of being moral, but also for the sake of being plain reasonable. Living in a modern age, I don't think the marginal benefits (temporary satisfaction) of crushing my enemy will exceed the corresponding marginal costs (going against my conscience).

Seek protection, not revenge. Revenge springs from anger, and anger's an acid that eats you from the inside and hinders you from focusing on more important and relevant matters. I also agree with Don regarding the omnipresence of enemies. To illustrate, ancient civilizations such as Greece and Rome were relentlessly attacked by various tribes and neighboring lands. Even wars persisted- after the first Punic war came another one (and then another one), or after the Battle of Salamis came the Battle of Plataea and so on. It's a vicious cycle, or like Rome always managing to put up another army against Hannibal.
Protection can come from making allies of your enemies (you should know who you're dealing with, though). Or come up with a peace treaty or truce at the very least. Wars are too costly.
But if this is in the case of sworn enemies (such as Hannibal and Scipio), I think it's best to focus more on preparing and improving yourself rather than on seeking revenge. Best to not get caught off-guard.

duey.guison said...

I would definitely agree with Marcy's remark on seeking protection, and not revenge.

Why you shouldn't crush you enemies totally? Simple. When your enemy loses and you don't totally crush them, you can use his remaining resources for building up your power in the army, and to compensate for the losses you made during the war. That's why peace treaties exists; for the winning army to compensate for their loss, and for the losing army paying up for their defeat and possibly, becoming allies with the winning army.

Though I see the point in crushing your enemy totally, which is completely eliminating the threat, I think that there's also an advantage of not doing so. For example, when you show him some mercy, perhaps he will think you are a good leader and then he will decide to be your ally. That would give you more power and respect.

I think forgiveness is better than totally eliminating your enemy because forgiving gives you a chance to become allies with your enemy making you even more powerful. On the other hand if you do seek revenge on your enemy, karma will play its role and your revenge will lead back to you. But then again, if your enemy doesn’t accept your apology, just as Marcy said, it is better to protect yourself than to kill your enemy.

Marvin Velasco said...

If your enemy is a real threat to you, then crushing him or her is definitely the way to go. Facing against your enemy in a grueling fight only to later show mercy and have him or her become your ally is one of the riskiest things you could ever do. Could you really forget all the things your enemy has done to you and pretend nothing ever happened? Could you then open up to your enemy and let them stay by your side? There will always be at least a tiny remnant of hate even after you show mercy. That would be enough for your enemy to turn on you and have revenge.

I think in the ancient times, this law applies. The most recent example is of the 3rd Punic war. When you think about it, how many times of the same war has there ever been in history. You have the first and second world war...that's pretty much it I could think of. But you had 3 Punic wars! Why was there 3? Because the enemy was not crushed totally. Even to the point of crawling around the Carthaginian managed to pull of the third war. The Romans finally got to their senses and annihilated them once and for all. But this is an example of the fact that during the ancient times it is best to totally crush your enemy. Yes many have said it is not very wise to do so because you forgo all the riches you can exploit from your enemies. History has shown however that people can only be exploited for so long. Another example are the Athenians. After the Persian, Athens became the super exploiter, which brought upon the Peloponnesian war.

In the modern world, I would go against this rule. An example would be two companies competing against each other. After a war, the victory would usually buy out the other company. You do not usually that company destroying the other from fear of it growing once again to compete.

Wars between countries today also do not follow this law because aside from Hitler, Riwanda and Darfur the world usually frowns upon such behavior of mass genocide.

What we do now is the opposite, like the Iraq war, since America is exploiting Iraq for its oil. (This however is underground news, but you would be an idiot not to believe it)

So, a very powerful law but unfortunately is a hasbeen law.

To Niko:

I see where you're coming from. Society now does look down upon this kind of behavior, however I don't believe this law is a hasbeen.

I believe it is possible to crush enemies without having to resort to killing them off. Crushing does not equal to killing or murder. It's just a more forceful way of expressing "take them out of the picture completely". The best way to achieve this without all the blood would be by paralyzing them such that they will be unable to recover to the extent that they can come back for you.

In ancient times, this had been achieved by the Romans when they paralyzed trade in Rhodes by simply issuing a decree that trade done only in a certain place (was it Delios? I forget) will be free of high taxes. Naturally, everyone wanted to skip on the taxes and thus, Rhodes, that had once become so wealthy, had never recovered to its former glory.

The modern example you gave is exactly what this is. When two companies go head to head with each other, at the end of it all the victor buys out the losing company. In this way, they take that company out of the picture completely by making it their own. You don't see companies that recover from this and start a new one intent on bringing the other down.

So yeah. I think this law still remains powerful, even now. It's just a matter of how one goes about crushing the opposition.

indeed this law is not ethical. but in terms of achieving power and success, it is still an effective strategy. There are instances where revenge doesn't stop from both parties. more often than not, if one of the parties makes a move on the other one, the attacked one will seek for revenge but wil fine a more excruciating punishment. It becomes a cycle until one party eventually loses. If this law is followed, (crushing the enemy totally) they will not have the chance to seek revenge anymore and thus increasing your survival as the one who is powerful.

i think this is just genius. this is one of my favorite laws in the book. unlike what Miriam Reyes said, for me, the law makes perfect sense. it is far from just waiting for the contestants to show up but no one came and you win the singing contest by default. the law is like you winning the contest then ruining the potential of the failed contestants so that they will never be able to rival you again. in the first place, the only rival you should have is yourself, you should strive to be the best because you want to be the best you can be and not just because you want to be better than everybody else. but if anybody gets in the way of your success then they must be terminated.

Niko Falcon said...

To Patricia:

I would have to argue that associating this law with the modern day example such as a business hostile takeover would be an insult to the law. First let us look at what this law represents (from the author's description of the law):

-Murder= Wu Chao, Empress of China, Mary Queen of Scots
- Total annihilation of our adversaries
- demise

It is just some brutal stuff and should not even be placed in the same playing field as a hostile takeover of a business, which can be the worst of the worst. I don't think it would be appropriate to put Wu Chao's massacre of her whole family with Philip Morris buying out cigarette companies around south east Asia.

The author also states, "In this day and age, being a ruthless power player is unlike being one in the past, when homicide was not as abhorrent in the eyes of society..."

I agree with this and thus why I think this law is a thing of the past. It just doesn't fit in our world today. Even though the book was written in 1998, Robert Greene was inspired by historical figures like Loius XIV, Niccolò Machiavelli, Catherine the great etc.

It is possible that the law could has grown white hair and is simply not as applicable now.

There is always a way to connect but because of my respect for this law, I feel that it should not be forced and as a result lose it's dignity.

It’s simply a matter of choosing between yourself and your enemy. The answer is quite obvious, right? You’ll definitely choose yourself over your enemy. So then what’s my point?

Have no mercy.

Crush your enemies as totally as they would crush you. Crush your enemy wholly, if not, he may have the chance to trounce you (and you would not want that).
Ultimately, the only peace and security you can hope from your enemies is their disappearance, is it not?

To crush one's enemies necessitates that one pulverize him now and in the beyond. Take from him everything he's got: seize his properties, turn his own family against him, snatch his opportunities to make up for what he has lost, brutally desecrate what he holds dear, deny him an honourable death or proper burial, etc. In short, break him, body, mind and soul. Native Americans used to dismember and slash their opponents' bodies to disfigure them in the afterlife.

The purpose of this is in order to deny him the opportunity and/or capability to bite back. Grind his nose into the dust so hard that he can't lift his head to plead for mercy, nor look into the face of the target of his vengeance.

Tomato Soup Lover said...

I totally agree with Nathan. When you plan to obliterate your opponent don't leave him with something he could use to get back to you. In short, destroy everything that is affiliated to your enemy. The problem is that if you inflict much pain to your enemy, and he survives that attack, surely that person would like to take revenge.

If you decide to beat someone, keep him down.If you are not successful in doing this, then be ready for the consequences. For as sure as Cookie Monster loves cookies, he will try to take revenge and inflict to you as much pain as you inflicted to him.

In a way, I believe that this law might be good for some persons, as what has been said, for your enemies not to plan a revenge. However, I believe, that victory doesn't taste so good in this regard. When we hate a person, we always wanted to see him suffer to a slow, fading death. Maybe, what we can do, if we have the power to crush our enemies totally is to let them feel your power, let them know that you can crush him, let them know you are powerful, and let them bend down to you and follow your will.

It's a dog eat dog world. If you don't crush your enemy first, you may end up the one crushed instead. You could follow this OR you could just be stoic and endure whatever blows your enemy may strike at you. It depends on you. Do you mind stepping on other people's toes? Oh wait. You're not merely stepping on other people's toes. I forgot. You crush them COMPLETELY.

So do you mind? If you don't, then by all means go ahead. Personally though, I wouldn't go for that. Revenge may be the sweetest thing but I believe in karma. I'd rather spend my time protecting myself than assaulting others. DEFENSE is the BEST OFFENSE after all.

As what Cato had always said, "Delenda Carthago!"

Crushing them totally is just a way to maintain your forces and position.

Alex: "Is power worth more than good associations with others? Is it worth crushing our fellow men, be they friends or enemies, knowing the already established moral tenets of society?"
>>> The thing here is that it is crushing your ENEMY and not your ALLIES. In history, when your given perspective rules on one's mind,it will result to seeing your country men die. Would you want that to happen? It is better to crush then your enemies before they crush all of you. This is one of the reason why Romans had their glory high. We can refer it as the defensive emperialism of the Romans. As they are driven by fear, they act as "If we don't attack first, they are going to attack us." I can relate then this law as when one do not crush his enemy totally, your enemy will then crush you wholly.

Being merciful can actually gain you more power. Yes, sure you're giving your opponent an opportunity to recover and retaliate; but there is also a small probability that they might feel grateful for your mercy, then they will join your cause. Thus, making you more powerful. Although this is very unlikely---this may happen.
