In fighting a battle, one must make sure that the enemy is annihilated in order to ensure a lasting victory. Thoroughness is critical in any dispute; it is necessary to exterminate foes. Throughout history, there have been many accounts concerning an unfinished rival taking revenge to the person who tried to exterminate him. By showing no mercy and pity for the enemy, retributions are impossible. According to the book The 48 Laws Of Power: “. . .the fate that faces all of us when we sympathize with our enemies, when pity, hope of reconciliation, makes us pull back from doing away with them. We only strengthen their fear and hatred of us. . . must be exterminated, crushed, denied the chance to return to haunt us. . .Reconciliation is out of the question. Only one side can win, and it must win totally.”
From good friends to bitter enemies
Hsiang Yu and Liu Pang were two celebrated leaders in Chinese history. Hsiang Yu was powerful and violent, while Liu Pang was wily and clever. In 208 B.C., the two friends had a conflict because they both wanted to get a hold of Hsien-yang, Ch’in’s capital. Hsiang Yu, with his mighty army, was able to capture Liu Pang several times, but always hesitated to have him killed. Liu Pang was able to seek revenge after some time, and slaughtered almost all of Hsiang Yu’s army. In the end, Hsiang Yu committed suicide, and Liu Pang became the founder of the Han Dynasty.
The shrewd seductress

Let us put this question in another way: Show mercy or not?
We can put this in two ways:
1. be merciful, but befriend this enemy-- if you decide to spare the enemy, it is imperative to befriend that person, so that that enemy will not seek revenge. It is like a double-edge mercy: One for mercy and another reconcillation.
2. be merciless--your enemy is your enemy, whenever one is spared, it is always a point of downfall. State for example the case of Liu Pang, his existence became a threat, and finally, he succeeded.

i think this law can be used on a case to case basis. Although one should always assume that the enemy would do the same to you and crush you completely given the chance, one should also consider that a weak and fallen enemy can become an asset as much as he is a liability.
also, mercy is too much a beautiful idea to just brush aside. You're showing mercy to an opponent could spell the difference between life or death for you later on if in case the tides change in your opponents favor.

this is always debatable, its always a case of whether or not you feel that certain mercy for one person or not, but i agree with jedd that if indeed you be merciful to someone how sure are you that he'll do the same to you? what guarantee do you have that your good deed will touch him deeply that he would be moved by this? and what assurance do you have that he wont try to crush you the very second you show the slightest bit of mercy?
but i guess as students raised in a catholic school, we always give others the benefit of the doubt even when its not even worth it.
i guess what we need to worry about here is how our decision will affect the society in the long run? TRY TO SEE THE BIGGER PICTURE

Of course the actions would be different for a brutal leader and a peaceful leader. Further more, it would be unjust for the brutal one to attack the peaceful one and for the peaceful one to show mercy to the brutal leader. I agree with the Tashie, though, that whatever decision is made at present will not assure the situation that you will have in the future. A true and strong leader will stand firmly, whether he gains from his decision or not.

nico, if you were a leader of a country then someone attacked you, killed your whole army, massacred your cities, destroyed your palaces, and screwed up everything that you had going, but still spared your life as a sign of mercy, would you not want revenge really badly even if you're on your knees weak and your empire badly damaged? People have been known to rise up again after a really bad fall. Personally I'd do all I can and work really hard so that I could bring that mofo down in anyway possible..=)

This is a little disappointing, but no. There are no nonviolent ways to success. There's always got to be a sacrificial lamb of some sort for you to finally get what you want; it just can't be avoided. There's always got to be something you're gonna step on to reach higher ground, you know? So yeah, selfishness and hurting others is kind of inevitable to win. I mean, there's always gonna be two sides, and one has to lose.
There's got to be a loser for a winner to exist. I guess the best thing to do is just avoid being on the losing side, and that's where the showing no mercy part comes in. Showing even a shred of humanity will allow people to take advantage of such "softness" and will make you lose your ground. Yeah, this is a little harsh, but it's the truth. If you want to stay in your place and keep that place, you have to get rid of all the competition that's getting in your way.

In a similar note, St. Thomas of Aquinas, in his Summa Theologica, devised some procedures on how to eradicate poor governments. one of which is on tyrants. In order to kill the tyrant, the killer should come from the people. Make sure that the enemy is totally killed, to prevent outrage from the tyrant. Lastly, make sure that conditions will get better after he has been killed.

in the context of any battle this will hold true. total complete dominance over ones opponent, enemy, rival, foe or contender. in the context of war, this is the most SOLID way to ensure total and complete obedience of people one has conquered. KILL THEM ALL. Not to sound sadistic and all but it is as what is true. To have a utopia the leader must have all his followers be in complete OBEDIENCE to him/her. The closest thing that people can achieve this “complete obedience”, is if all the people are in favor of him, do not doubt him, trust him, agree to his words and feels the same way he does. If one foe, enemy or rival is left to live, he/she is still susceptible to change of thought (even when he/she has said to be in complete peace already) and fight back. The law to crush the enemy TOTALLY is what lets the victors keep their prize after winning it. The closest, sure way to be able to do so.

Well I think it depends. Crush the enemy if they hold no value and don't if they could be used for something else.

Seriously. In a battlefield, are you willing to risk your life based on how you think your enemy will respond to mercy? I don't think so. I am reminded of all those tv shows where the hero grants a foe mercy, and when he turns around to walk away, the jerk takes out a hidden knife and aims for the hero. My outrage at said jerks only abates when the heroes are totally prepared for the blow and cut up said jerks into pieces the next second.
It would be cool if this can be done in real life, but unfortunately, not everyone has superspeed and ultra-fast reflexes. How to make up for the lack of these? When they go down, make sure they stay down (does not necessarily have to be killing, but make sure they have no means of getting back at you). :D

I agree with Joanne this law is scary. It sounds so brutal and psychotic that the end might not even justify the means. But then I guess warfare hardly questions morality anymore. If you're so dead-set on getting something you want, most of the time what you want would be all that matters to you and you would force yourself to get it any way possible. But really it sounds more like paranoia and fear that if you don't finish your enemies off then and there especially when you know you've gone more chances then them, they might get up stronger and try to defeat you.

This law was applied by the Romans when they burned Carthage to the ground. Cato the elder was one man who believed that " Carthage must be destroyed," even when Carthage was losing territories from Numidia and ultimately becoming weaker and weaker. Rome at that time was growing, taking over Spain. They had in their control the Carthaginians, who even after paying off their indemnity of 10,000 talents, was still viewed as subordinates of Rome. Rome takes advantage of Carthage's vulnerability by making them negotiate and not giving them what they ask for. Carthage loses their men and weapons to Rome but feel that they have had enough when Rome asks that they move their territory away from the water. The third Punic war ends with Rome bruning carthage, in a form of "systematic genocide." The Romans eliminated the Carthaginian Race.
This is one way of "crushing your enemy totally." I guess it is to be expected from sworn enemies who have fought for so long.

Have you ever felt down after a heartbreaking defeat? All you wanted to do then was avenge your lose but understood that time is of the essense. You needed enough time to heal your wounds and correct where you had gone wrong before. This is exactly what we need to fear when we leave an enemy half dead. That is why I agree with the whole concept of annahilating your enemy completely. Do not risk your throne out of mercy because once your enemy has raised another force, he will also not show mercy.

I can see that this law leaves the option of diplomacy and civility out.
I suppose that makes sense. Thinking within the context of one who would apply this law, diplomacy might seem to be kind of a weakness, and a sign of dependence. Weakness because, well, opposition would think, "Why DON'T you want to fight? Are you afraid to lose?" and dependence because opposition would think "Why don't you want to ruin ties between us? Do you need us for something that you don't have?"
So I guess I can see where this law is coming from.
Anyway. I just find this law so amusing because it sounds so angry and bitter and filled with negativity - and at the same time, with some degree of wisdom.

There is a danger in not crushing your enemy totally. For the world's most powerful war leaders, current or otherwise, "take no prisoners". I think it has been mentioned a couple of times in class that if you leave enemy soldiers alive - even if they are heavily injured - they can heal and recover, and there is always the possibility that they will build a stronger army and retaliate.

Sad part is, this debate is about getting power. So, if you really want the power that badly, just finish eradicating the enemy to get it over with. Enemy dies, you grab power. This strategy is effective if your aim really is to erase your enemy from the face of the earth.
But is it honorable? Kicking your enemy when he is down--is it a fair way of fighting? Are you willing to stoop that low? I guess it's all up to the circumstances of the situation...

If you spare your enemies, they can do either of two things: (1) recover and exact revenge or, less likely, (2) respect you and (possibly) pledge their allegiance to you.
For me, it's about weighing-in the factors. Annihilating your enemies completely will guarantee that your enemies won't exact revenge on you, but you won't be able to use them for anything.
If there is a hint of uncertainty, it's just better to annihilate them. Only spare your enemies if you're absolutely sure that they're not going to retaliate.

This, I think is only applicable in war. Where to leave a threat unfinished is to invite a bigger, better prepared one. In reality, however, not finishing off your opponent may be a good thing.
In business, competition drives innovation. When you eliminate competition, you stagnate. When you stagnate, you die. And you tend to bring down quite a lot of people with you too... From employees to clients, they all go down with you.
So all in all, the law is good. I like it. But apparently, it's not too good in some cases. Especially in commerce.
