Law 35: Master the Art of Timing

“Recognize the moment to hide in the grass or slither under a rock, as well as the moment to bare you fangs and attack.”

Oftentimes, we do things just because we want to, or maybe because we are too carried away by the moment. If we achieve what we want, it’s just luck. If not, then you know you have more to learn.

There’s always a right time for everything. Knowing when to act is equally important as knowing how to act. Just like Joseph Fouche, the French commoner-turned-revolutionary, it took him almost 30 years from being a school teacher to a revolutionary, from being a moderate to a radical and back to being a radical, from siding with Napoleon to siding with the next government and back to serving Napoleon, all done with perfect timing. The upshot? He was able to remain safe and at most times, in power, amidst this great turmoil caused by political instability in French history.

And the lesson? Be patient at the same time, be sensitive to time while waiting for the right moment, and know how to act according to the spirit of the times or the trend. Yet be careful not to wait too long, don’t be afraid to take your chance when the time is ripe, and respond before getting yourself drowned on a sinking ship!

We must learn to manipulate time and play tricks with it, and not the other way around.

What about the tricks?
1. Never do things against the clock.
Always give yourself ample amount of time. Rushing will only make you look unprofessional, and more importantly, you’ll make with stupid decisions.

2. Never panic when you’re given insufficient time.
Panicking will only make things worse. It might create more problems requiring fixing, and you’ll end up using up more time. While fluttering will only reveal your anxiety to your enemies, making them more confident.

3. Upset the timing of others.
Make them hurry and lose their pace, make them wait and lose their perception of time. Magicians are experts of this trick. They alter our perception of time by slowing down the pace. They intentionally move slowly to create the illusion of speed, making people think the rabbit has appeared instantaneously.

Time is irreplaceable, once gone, forever lost. Know how to play the tricks and be the Most Valuable Player in the game of time.

It's like saying "think before you act, but don't think too long, or else you'd waste the moment".
If you act without thinking, you'd make bad decisions and regret it.
If you think too long and the moment passed, the opportunity would be lost and you'd regret it.
Therefore, in order to not regret, one should remember time is of the essence.
This is a good law. Very true.

I think, other than manipulating time, the basis of this law is knowledge and a keen eye, when dealing with opportunity.

those who are fond of displaying power, would oft force the situation into a favorable and opportune scenario.

while those who are fond of effectively wielding power, know when an opportune moment rises.

it requires two skills.

1. knowing what to look for
2. knowing what to do when you see it.

both of which are limited only to one's capability to perceive, calculate and counteract, all in a single fluid motion.

It's most basic war application, is single combat.

A swordsman must study his opponent from head to toe, learn his movements and tendencies, to be able to find the hole in his defenses, and deal the lethal blow.

A friend of mine once told me that opportunities are like fruits. You can have unripe fruits, and learn that you'd much rather have the ripe one, so you wait 'til it ripens - or you can have overly ripe fruits, and learn that you can't reverse the process of ripening, and so are left with no other choice, as the fruit will rot. It's parallel to the concept of opportunities. If you seize it too soon, you have enough time to pace yourself and seek the next good opportunity. But if you wait too long, you'll realize that the opportunity had already come and gone.

Timing is key. Jumping in and seizing an opportunity too early or too late is potential chaos - but somehow, seizing an opportunity too early is better than seizing an opportunity too late. There seems to be a bigger chance of learning from overeagerness, and of reparation.

Well, either way, if we're going to try to gain power or control, we might as well include the right timing into the picture.

This actually ties in rather well with Law 29: Plan all the way to the end.

With careful planning and foresight, one can see opportunities and possible hindrances in the future. Ideally, this would help one with the decision of when to act.

"Time is gold." This must be the most repeated motto ever, but time really is very, very, very important because you cannot get it back once it passes.
Timing is everything, just like in the movies Ocean's 11, 12 ,13. Every moment is important and the task that your supposed to do must be accomplished in that given time. You might screw up all the following plans if you screp up the first one.

Time is priceless. It is more precious than any silver or gold. When it passes by, it will never return. Be wary of the time and know the trades of using it. Even with the best men, the right tool and the right experience, if destiny will not let it happen, it will just go in vain. You must be sensitive to the time. Never hasten things because rash decisions and actions will achieve nothing. At the same time, do not wait too long because time waits for no one. Make time your friend and there's no telling what you can accomplish.

Time is gold. right? so that we have to value our time and learn how to use it very well.

According to the bible, "Ecclesiastes 3:1-8.. A Time for Everything." and that's true.

There's always a time for everything.. we have to wait for it.. in every aspect of our lives.. in our lovelife, in our study, in our dreams.. and many more :)

Just wait in God's perfect time..

This law requires a lot of skill to master. First you have to know when the time is right for you to act. Then you have to make the most out of it otherwise you just wasted the perfect chance; it won’t be the perfect chance if you don’t perfectly execute your actions. In addition to this, if you missed the perfect opportunity, you won’t be able to have a second chance just as everyone says, you can’t turn back time. Two things to consider here: perfect timing and perfect execution

If I were to place the laws of power in groups according to importance and timeliness, Law 35 would belong to the most important group. I really do think that timing is important because time allows us so much. Firstly, it allows us to think and plan, to observe, to reflect on the current conditions of the time and try to foresee future occurrences. We must use time properly in order to maximize it and do as much as we can from the time we have been afforded. We must not be quick to act for there is a right time for every action. If we make decisions without delay, regret may very well come soon.

i agree that for this law to take effect, it requires a lot of skill and attention. Dealing with time requires a lot of thinking and deliberation, especially when you want it to work for you. I like this law because it is very applicable in our lives now.

Timing is actually a bit tricky, in my opinion. I feel that it's got more to do with luck and awareness than any actual skill. Awesome stuff tends to happen when you are the right place at the right time and did the right thing. That's three variables. And only one is actually under your control. Whether you will do the right thing. The other two tend to happen only by chance...

Eric Andres said...

Very true. Specially about the part on not panicking when given insufficient time... We should really keep track of time, because doing the right thing at the wrong time and doing the wrong thing at the right time can both prove to be disastrous.

Just like what the cliche' "time is gold" meant, timing is indeed important.

In fact, a good example of applying good timing is in buying goods. Of course you wouldn't buy vegetables or fruits just after a typhoon because prices skyrocket bas high as 200%. Throughout the year, there are times when it is best to buy certain fruits and vegetables and there are times that you should avoid buying them (think of why some fruits have their "seasons").

As for battling, it does help when you ambush the enemy at the right time because through that you could have the advantage in your hands.

Timing is undeniably very crucial. Just like in a great comedy act, the success or failure of an individual depends on the right timing.

I agree that indeed, there is a time for everything. More to recognizing when the right moment is, one must also recognize the value of it.
