Law 16: "Use Absence to Increase Respect and Honor"

Law 16 is all about knowing when to lay low after getting one's self noticed. This is why we have sayings like "You'll never know what you've got 'til it's gone" or "Absence makes the heart grow fonder." The power here is creating an image for one's self, an image worth remembering, an image that if gone would be craved or longed for. This longing is the effect one wants to get from others after pulling one's self out of the picture.

The book says that "Everything in the world depends on absence and presence". Establish that presence and it will stay on even in one's absence. Lingering around too long after making a name for one's self would make one common or just one of the crowd, taken for granted even. That strong impression one used to have would be gone or diminished because people have gotten used to it. One won't be respected as much. According to the book, "You become a habit." Being aware of the right moment to withdraw after all the attention, especially if this withdrawal was done abruptly, would make one missed, would make people look for the person they look up to or have come to adore. On the other hand, disappearing too earlier could result to one's being forgotten, something not desirable at all.

As an example, the book mentioned Napoleon as one who practices this law. He said that "If I am often seen at the theater, people will cease to notice me."

"Create value through scarcity."

True, Napoleon did say that whenever you are always seen, people will not notice you anymore. This bring you to be iconic, a saint, a powerful leader. However, does it make the nation itself in chaos. State Akhenaten for example, he is absent for the rest of Egypt, so the military did nothing, and some lands are in chaos in danger being invaded by neighboring tribes.

I agree with you that some time of absence of a leader, really generates a lot of respect especially to people whom he/she is ruling. When we think of Marcos, for exmaple, many things come into our mind like the people power, martial law, and his lengthy rule over the Philippines. A lot of people thought of him as a president who was so greedy of power. Maybe if he resigned or at least just took two terms of presidency, we will remember him as one of the greatest leaders that we had (remember that the early time of Marcos's era, Philippines really progress a lot) and not as a dictator and harsh leader. A time of absence could have made us respect him more.

Similar to speaking less, when you're perpetually present, you'll be taken for a regular they won't bother with when doing a headcount. For example, if your class wants to go out for the holidays, whose attendance do you think will elicit more response: the one who's always game when it comes to outings, or the one who rarely goes out with classmates? It's definitely the latter; her friends will see it as a rare opportunity, making them maximize their time with her.

Remember: you don't want your presence to deteriorate in value.

Knowing when to appear and to disappear and to reappear again is very important. I agree absence increases respect and honor. Timing is important, the right moment.

I want to to ask, when is the perfect time to appear/disappear?..

that was quite a good question Luigi.

for me i think the leader should appear when:

time of trouble is happening in the country. he/she should serve as a "coach" in a way, he/she should encourage the people that a future hope is coming while at the same time able to command instructions for the people to get over the trouble that they are facing.

I think the perfect time to disappear is when you know you have engaged yourself on the minds of others. An example is if you did something that you saw made a big impact or if you find out know you've become the center of attention, the one everybody wants to see. I think the best instance though is if your reputation precedes you. It's surprising sometimes and you could get carried away with the sudden fame, but really, you wouldn't want to lose your luster by becoming just another face in the crowd.

i agree with this, sometimes people who make themselves known and then lay low for a while make more lasting impressions than those who become a common name for people. when people know you, they become so used to you that you may seem as someone just like them.

Hello ex-blockmate! :)
I-like-your-final-remark. Just recently, my Economics professor told us why resources are valuable (and thus require proper allocation) in the first place: scarcity. In Accounting, similarly, plant/fixed assets (such as land, machinery, and equipment)have value mainly because they depreciate (depreciation needs to be accounted for) and don't last forever.
Material things aside, I agree with what has already been said about using absence to increase value. In my opinion, however, absence can also permit you more time to improve yourself, make yourself more valuable, so that by the time you reappear, your image will be looked up to more. Consequently, time must also be accounted for. The only thing permanent in this world is change. What if, while laying low, someone better, someone more dazzling than you've ever become, comes along and takes your audience away? It'd then be wise to be wary of the changing situations while you're laying low, and then use your time to re-create your image. And when you've finally decided to put yourself back into the picture, you'll see that you're still in control.
I also find this very relevant to pop culture. Any "sell-outs" that you know of?

I agree with Marcy Pilar and Luigi Ramirez: Knowing when to re-appear IS highly important.

Time does tend to distort memories of the past; disappear too long and you will disappear from the minds of the people. Making your presence felt in the right way at the right time (before and/or after disappearing) will effectively reinforce your image and the mental representation in the memory of the people.

I think MTV is an example of a show in pop culture that produces sell-outs. They air almost everywhere around the world and the artists' singles are played over and over again in a day for over a month or two. Yes it may be a good way to promote the artists' music, but seeing the same videos everyday could get sickening and boring after a while.

As it was connected to MTV by the previous comment, perhaps this also holds true for Hollywood and local showbiz. They actually refer to this as overexposure.

An example for this is Miley Cyrus. It was featured one time in the news that people actually like her, but she seems to be everywhere that fans (not the devoted ones, of course) are starting to get sick of her.

And maybe this is why the likes of Julia Roberts has managed to stay long in the business.

Haha Miley Cyrus has gotten too overrated for my taste. Aside from being almost everywhere, her scandals don't do well for her "reputation", either. One of my friends thinks she'll be the next Britney Spears lol.

Doesn't it sting inside when you're labeled as a habit? Being present all the time would eventually luster your value. On the other hand, being not present at all won't give you any value to start with. This is the art of attack and withdrawal. One needs to be vigilant for signs when to move forward or backward. It all depends on the timing. When you do this perfectly, your presence will be celebrant as though you were a hero. As Bianca mentioned, "create value through scarcity."

Looking at history, it can be deduced that this law is and can be effective sometimes. One must be careful not to overdo it, and they should know, as what you said, when to withdraw. If done rashly or imprudently then people might view or label you inconsistent and undependable.

One should be cautious if he or she wants to do this.

Once this law is carried out, unpredictability comes to the picture. See what my law says :D

I agree with Eric. knowing when to reappear is key. Just like the law of Mastering the art of Timing. The timing is essential to make this law effective. and with the combo of planning, very powerful and gamebreaking law.

Sure there are elements of search engine optimization that might only be done once and then revised like optimizing your website but the nature of search engine marketing never really stops
the gears from moving. As long as you do not overspend, you will be able to use
your advertising money to make more money. If they see too many clicks coming form the same IP in a short period of time
they will often screen the traffic.
